2016 – ongoing

Vacancy is a project about emptiness.

Years of working for tour operators around the world, before the ease and facility of AirBNB, has resulted in a forgotten archive of polaroid test images of hotel interiors. These polaroids were shot as test frames, with the sole purpose of confirming the right elements of composition, lighting etc., a function that is now performed by camera screens. These polaroids also served the purpose of identifying the properties at a later stage when numerous rolls of film were developed.

Revisiting these photographs years later, the emptiness evoked in these images collectively is haunting. The brief was always to photograph hotel rooms, restaurants, lobbies and public areas void of any activity. A complete refusal and denial of the public for whom these spaces were created.

Vacancy is a work in progress.
